Athens Volksmarch Kickoff
October 23rd, 2010

Join us at the Athens Visitors Center for the kick off the American Volkssport Association (AVA) sanctioned Athens VolksMarch hosted by the Capital City Wanderers Walking Club, Inc., which is a volksmarching club affiliated with the American Volkssport Association (AVA).

This AVA sanctioned walk is a 10K (6.2-miles) and 5K-1+ primarily on paved streets and sidewalks; however, there are a few places where there is not a sidewalk.

Walkers should register at the Athens Visitors Center located at 100 Beaty Street North between 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM. Advance registration is not required and parking is available.  There is a $3 registration fee for IVV Credit. Those not seeking IVV Credit may walk for free.

This walk passes through four historic districts:  Beaty Historic District, Athens Square Historic District; Houston Historic District; and the Athens College Historic District.

The Beaty Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, along with the Athens College District.  The area features beautiful historic homes and is continually being preserved and protected to uphold its historic beauty.

While on the walk, participants will pass a cemetery, firehouse, historic churches, monuments honoring law enforcement, museums, railroad heritage, veteran memorials and more.

A trail will be open for VolksMarch walkers all year starting in January 2011.  The walkers box will be located at the Hampton Inn at I-65 Exit 351.
