United Way of Athens &
Limestone County celebrated our community on Tuesday
September 13th, 2011. Kaye McFarlen, Director Athens
Limestone County United Way, brought volunteers,
sponsors and caring individuals together for a day of
community projects, lunch and public appreciation.
All volunteers
received a "Day of Caring" t-shirt, and the monetary
donations will be distributed among the 14 partner agencies
for their programs. Last year in Limestone County, UW had
450 volunteers to work on 50 different community projects.
Guest speaker Dr. Bob
Glenn, Athens State University President, gave a moving and
at times humorous talk on how much
volunteering does for the volunteer as well as the project
or individual. Speaking from a personal experience he sited,
"Even if you have a 'Master's degree' and know
everything, you can still be influenced by helping
another." In closing Glenn quoted Reinhold Niebuhr, "There is
no greater sinner than the man who does nothing because he
can't do it all". "Anyone can always do one thing, even if it
is as simple as just showing up!"
You can
affect one person, surprisingly it could be you!

Underneath everything
we are. Underneath everything we do. We are all people.
Connected. Interdependent. United.
And when we reach out
a hand to one, we can influence the condition of all. That's
what it means to LIVE UNITED.
