The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives now has signage on the North and South bound sides of Interstate 65.
Thanks to the efforts of the Museum Director, Sandy Thompson, and former Senator Tom Butler, people traveling on Interstate 65 can take a break in their trip and enjoy the history provided at the Veterans Museum.
Director Thompson began work on the signs when she came on board at the Museum in April 2009, she picked up the work of Museum volunteer Jim Patteson who had started the process a few years earlier. Patteson had asked several different state agencies to assist with placement of signage on I-65 to inform travelers of the museum with no avail.
Director Thompson spoke with Senator Tom Butler of the predicament, he assisted with the funds to begin the process and roughly 2 years later the large, bright blue, attraction signs are in place.
The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives celebrates the accomplishments and sacrifices of the service person, and their families on the home front, with displays devoted to each of the wars from our local veterans in the restored L&N Freight Depot located at 100 W. Pryor Street, in Athens.
