KALB MAKES DONATION FOR DOWNTOWN BIKE RACKS

October 24, 2011, Athens, AL: Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful presented a $500 check to the Spirit of Athens for the purpose of purchasing bike racks for the Courthouse Square.   The check represents proceeds from the Recycling for Cycling project started by Marsha Patterson, Recycling Coordinator for KALB.  KALB's Recycling Center added funds to round off the check to an even $500.

"KALB decided to give the funds to Spirit of Athens because they have a design team working on the downtown area," said Lynne Hart, KALB Executive Coordinator.  "It just makes sense for us all to work together for the good of the community."

“Spirit of Athens is very appreciative of the donation and hope to have a design that will coordinate with existing fixtures soon,” said Trisha Black, SOA Executive Director.  “SOA’s design committee will be reviewing designs that would compliment the benches and trash cans already placed downtown. There are three sites on the square that would accommodate racks for 3 to 4 bikes.”

Patterson developed the Recycling for Cycling project after a KALB Commission member  mentioned that he had to secure his bike to a bench when visiting downtown businesses.   The project kicked off on America Recycles Day last year which is celebrated annually on November 15th.  Residents were asked to drop off aluminum cans at the KALB office to support the purchase of bike racks, and immediately cans started rolling in.

Also as part of the Recycling for Cycling project, slow rides through town were organized to bring attention to bike safety and the benefits of riding bikes for pleasure and transportation.  T-shirts were created with a bicycle logo with recycling symbols in the wheels to promote the project.  Shirts are still available in limited sizes.
