National American Indian Heritage Month
Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks, middle, signed a proclamation this week recognizing November as National American Indian Heritage Month.

Pictured with the mayor are Katherine Thornton,

and Doris Estes, regent of John Wade Keyes.
In 1976, Congress adopted a Native American Awareness Week to promote the customs and traditions of Native Americans. That led to the National American Indian Heritage Month designation in 1990.
