Earth Day Celebration 2011 was a true joy of learning and having a terrific time! The Saturday Event was full of activities, crafts, entertainment, animals and food!

The weather was a bit chilly and still a little damp in places, but the alpacas and lambs didn't seem to mind. The wind tried to rearrange most of the displays from the many vendors, but a few extra pins, strings and paper weights seemed to take care of the problem.

Sarrell Dental brought their information, tooth paste and toothbrushes for the children. The Limestone County Bee-Keepers had their local honey for sale and displayed a case of their bees. Habitat for Humanity director, Garth Lovvorn, was introducing Carissa Williams, who will be the manager of the new Re-Store which will be opening this summer.

The Alabama Veterans Museum's Director Sandy Thompson and secretary Vicki Bedingfield was informing the public of how WWII was instrumental in teaching people how to recycle which was a highlight in the history of recycling.

The war efforts demanded much of the resources, leaving little for the home front. Some items such as metal, rubber and even certain food items had to be rationed as they were needed overseas for the war. It became necessary for most homes to recycle their table scraps, newspapers and other items, since recycling offered an extra source of materials.

It wasn't until
the 1970s that recycling became more popular again and drop-off recycling centers were established. The environmental movement had started in the  1960s, and there was beginning to be a greater public awareness and rising environmental consciousness.

Lynne Hart never disappoints the public when she has her events! These events not only informative but are a source of funding for the cause. From her Wacky Quacky Ducky Derby, Aluminum Can Bash, Cycling to Recycle, Cleaning up our Lakes and Parks to Earth Day, she is determined to make Athenians aware and teach them how to live in harmony with our surroundings and be respectful of them.
