Limestone County to Host Alabama Dixie Youth AAA State 9 &10 yr old Tournament

Friday July 28th Tournament update:
In the Dixie Youth State Tournament last night, Daphne won the State Championship title over Enterprise with the score at 1-0. Athens City and Recreation Department workers did an excellent job maintaining the fields and cleaning up the stands each night. Their tireless hours of work on this tournament helped make it a success. Mary Ann, Jeff, Louise and Jerry Todd managed the Hospitality room and took care of our guest/visitors and their needs. Madison RV provided the RV used for the hospitality room and Chick-fil-A, Logan's, Zaxby's, and Sweet Peppers Deli donated food for the hospitality room. Please support these businesses and thank them for their donations to our tournament. Thank you to all the teams, families, supporters and volunteers for their commitment and hard work. And our extreme gratitude to Tony Campbell for negotiating to bring this tournament to Athens!

Hundreds of parents, grandparents, siblings and ball players will descend on Athens for the next week to watch the 9 &10 year olds play for the Alabama Dixie Youth AAA State Championship title at the Athens Sportsplex on Highway 31.

Tony Campbell, President of the Athens Dixie Youth Baseball, said “we are the host city of 11 districts from throughout the state coming as far as Mobile, AL, that will be a total of 12 teams playing at our Sportsplex, starting Friday July 22nd thru July 28th."

Campbell outlined the week saying, “there will be the Homerun Derby Friday night at 5:30PM, the official opening ceremonies will begin Friday night at 8PM.” “Mayor Ronnie Marks, will welcome our visitors, then we will have our guest speaker, Gary Knotts, retired Major League Baseball pitcher throwing out the first pitch.”

The games are scheduled to begin Saturday at 4 – 6 – 8PM. Then Sunday morning there will be a non-denominational Church service to be held at the Limestone County Event Center. Monday – Thursday’s games are scheduled for 6 and 8PM with the State Championship title being on Thursday night.

Campbell said, "he would like to encourage all of Athens’ residents to come out and support the teams, Athens is the host to the Dixie Youth State Tournaments every other year, it is a wonderful benefit for the entire city and county to have the opportunity to entertain the teams and their families this week."
