While out enjoying the beautiful October weather around the Square I came upon our local group of Dulcimer players. The Athens Dulcimer Jam Group began meeting in October 2003 at the Athens Recreation Center. They have established themselves as a group where dulcimer players can come together and Jam with other players.

The encourage beginners to practice and learn tunes by listening and recording them at jams, listening to CD’s, watching DVD’s and playing with other folks during the week.

The ADJG are very active around Athens and surrounding areas playing at hospitals, assisted living centers, schools, music venues and other civic places.

Jam Schedule: 1st and 3rd Thursdays (some exceptions in Oct. & Dec.)

6:30-7:00 P.M. there is a mini-concert, open-mic, or new tune instruction.

We welcome all levels of Mountain / Appalacian & Hammered Dulcimer interests from those just checking us out to see what a dulcimer is to those who grew up with dulcimers.

As the name implies we play primarily hog fiddles however our jams welcomes all sorts of stringed instruments. We have members who play autoharps, guitars, fiddles, mandolins, spoons, and limberjacks.

We are a fun-lovin’ Jam group that plays a variety of music from bluegrass to waltzes. Everyone is welcomed!

Dulcimer players are tuned to the key of D; while those with a capo can also play in A, Em and G, we do encourage playing in the key of D mostly so everyone can join in, remembering that this is a jam group. There are designated nights when there will be “open mic”; this is the time to show off that new tune you have learned; we encourage you to do this, especially dulcimer players – we like the sounds of tunes played in other keys!

* Our Jam group has the reputation for making the best use of the short period of time we have together; therefore everyone is encouraged to:
    ** keep talking to a minimum between tunes
     ** have your tune ready when the mic comes to you
     ** announce what you are playing so everyone can hear
     ** when someone is singing, play a little softer than you normally would
     ** leave the mic in front of you even if you request someone else to lead it off
     ** listen to and follow the speed of the person leading the tune
     ** play softer if someone is “taking a break”

   * If you wish to learn a new tune or a new technique, do so during breaktime or after the Jam; (we have the room until 9:30)
   * No instrument should override the sweet sound of the dulcimer, but should enhance the dulcimer sounds.
    * And lastly, we show appreciation for everyones’ efforts by listening, playing along and giving applause after they play.

NOTE: We have worked hard to make this a fun place to come together in playing and fellowship and we all need to make an effort to continue to keep it that way; we hope you all feel welcome to be yourself and have fun and invite your friends.
