Since 1980, there has been a Limestone County Department of History and Archives in Athens, which was established by the Limestone County Commission. In 2004 Limestone County purchased the 1905 L&N Depot and remodeled it to house the Archives.

On Saturday June 18th, Rebekah Davis, Archivist, and her Assistant, April Davis, held an Open House to invite the public in to see the many treasures they have housed in the form of deeds, wills, plat books, marriages, family histories, periodicals, photographs and many many other forms of historical information.

The "Friends of the Archives" a support group who maintains a small collection of material pertaining to Limestone County, were also on hand to help answer questions and give tours. The "Friends of the Archives" have published an extensive collection of photographs and other important and personal records. After years of tracking and pouring over information they have published records of Limestone County citizens in bound books for genealogical searches.

The Archives is open from 8AM-4:30PM Monday-Friday. You may contact them at 256-233-6404 or lcarchives@knology.net & lcarchives2@knology.net. You can also find them on FaceBook at Limestone County Archives.
