"Learn to Read" August Chamber Ambassador Spotlight

Chamber Ambassador, Eva Trussell, introduced the monthly Ambassador 'Spotlight' business for August, 'Learn to Read' and their Director, Rhonda Andrews.

Learn to Read is a United Way sponsored program. Learn-To-Read is the local literacy program for Athens and Limestone County, primarily working with adults who have difficulty reading. They also offer classes in English as a Second Language (ESL).

Rhonda provided some staggering statistics on our literacy in Athens, in our age group of 23 yrs and over only 79.3% have graduated high school compared to Madison County where they have 88%. In age groups 35 years and older only 19.3% graduated college compared to 37% in Madison.

Learn to Read has served during the 2010-2011 academic year: 42 Basic Students, 69 English as a Second Language (ESL), 23 Parents as Teachers (PAT/ASTP), 27 Children in Summer Reading Program with 77 tutors for all these programs.
